The Critic's 2011 Lists

Top Ten Albums of 2011
This year seemed to be a good year for melodeath.  A couple albums could go up or down a spot depending on my mood.  This list reflects my most current attitude.

10. While Heaven Wept - Fear of Infinity
While Heaven Wept blend doom metal with symphonic and power metal elements to create a songs that tell stories.  No Steve not science fiction stories.

9. Iced Earth - Dystopia
OK so Matt Barlow comes back makes an album that disappointed.  He leaves the band a second time and Iced Earth makes an album that should not be this good.  This makes my top 3 Iced Earth albums of all time.

8. Megadeth - Th1rt3en
By far not as good as the last few efforts by metal's greatest underdog.  But still good song writing and at least Megadeth isn't jerking the fans off with ass nuggets like Lulu.

7. Stratovarius - Elysium
I had a bad feeling I would never hear an album worthy of comparison to Stratovarius' "Visions".  The last couple albums I have gotten from Stratovarius have been very sub par. Best album they have done since "Visions" or "Destiny".

6. Children of Bodom - Relentless Reckless Forever
This must be the year of comebacks.  The last 3 albums COB did were really forgettable for me.  This album brings me back to "Hatebreeder".  Give this one a shot.

5. Devin Townsend - Deconstruction
Devin Townsend has definitely slowed in time, or maybe he has just grown up.  With that in mind this album is a crazy heavy fucker.  Very progressive and aggressive. Although it isn't as aggressive as any of the older SYL stuff, it for sure is worth a listen.

4. Symphony X - Iconoclast
I am not a huge Symphony X fan.  This album is their breakout album to me.  They have added the right amount of progression to take the music to something more than how fast can Romeo play guitar.  With that said don't think for second they slowed down, this fucker is fast.

3. Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire

Great album!  This one has been in rotation all year and hasn't come off the ipod.  The melodic death metal scene has kinda sucked the last few years but this one stands out.  GREAT STUFF!

2. Myrath - Tales of the Sand
Progressive and original.  Singer is fresh and very distinguishable.  Each album they put out gets better and better.  They sound very comfortable in the direction they are heading.  Keep an eye on Myrath.

1. Arch Enemy -  Khaos Legions
I am a huge fan of the death metal frontwoman Angela Gossow.  Another highlight to their long list of melodic death metal albums.  Arch Enemy in my opinion has no bad albums and continues to stay fresh without changing or compromising their very distinct sound.
